Currently on his High & Alive World Tour, Keith Urban traveled to Australia for a string of shows in August. Although on his way back to the United States to perform in Nashville, the singer took a moment to discuss his ongoing career in country music and the stardom that followed him over the last few decades. While a top name in the genre, Urban shocked Lon Helton when he revealed how much he loved to drive.
With Urban being one of country music’s biggest stars, most would believe that he opted to have a driver. It would make sense given that most stars like to be driven around. However, Urban took a different approach. Instead of sitting on a tour bus or the back seat, he insisted, “I drive, I drove to the gig the other night, and someone asked ‘How come you drive yourself?’ I said I always drive myself. Somebody driving me is like somebody playing my guitar. I’d rather be doing it.”
Using the drive as a way to unwind, Urban saw the activity as a type of therapy. Having no issue with the open road, the singer seemed to love it so much that he joined Blake Shelton and Gretchen Wilson on the new show, The Road. Wanting to help aspiring artists make their dreams a reality, the hitmaker will take the contestants on the road with him, allowing them to open for a few of his shows.
While there are several singing competitions offering a record deal and a cash prize, The Road looked to offer something entirely different – life experience. Scheduled to premiere on October 19th, The Road will take aspiring artists on tour with none other than Keith Urban. The contestant will get the chance to open for the country star at numerous venues. Although they will receive advice from Urban, contestants will also gain support from Blake Shelton and Gretchen Wilson. Having opened for singers in the past, Urban recently recalled the awkward moment when he took the stage before Kenny Chesney.
Promoting the new show, Shelton and Urban sat down to recall a few fond memories when first starting out. For any hitmaker, they always remembered the ups and downs of stardom. But for Urban, his awkward moment surrounded becoming Entertainer of the Year. Shelton started the story, revealing, “My favorite thing I was gonna say was, Keith Urban was opening for Kenny Chesney, but then Keith Urban won Entertainer of the Year.”
With Chesney as the headliner, Urban watched his stardom hit new heights with the award. Even Shelton joked, “You know you’re kicking the headliner’s a** when you win Entertainer of the Year.”

Keith Urban has kicked off the international dates of his “High And Alive World Tour” with the launch of the tour’s second leg in Newcastle, Australia at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
Chase Matthew and DJ Old Nawty will join Urban for the nine remaining Australian arena shows, including two performances in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as three in Brisbane. On Sept. 10 Urban will head to Canada for seven shows.
“I grew up there, playing in all the pubs and clubs, so it definitely brings a different kind of energy,” says Urban of touring in his home country. “For me, playing live is all about the moment. I strive to get my audiences loose and relaxed for two hours – no matter where they are.”
After Australia and Canada, Urban will return to U.S. arenas for the tour’s final leg.

Keith Urban and Australia’s Tamworth Country Music Festival have partnered to launch the “Keith Urban Rising Star Scholarship,” which will provide an emerging artist the opportunity to perform, write, record and meet industry personnel in Nashville, as well as enjoy two days of recording time at Urban’s recording studio, The Sound.
“Sometimes all a musician needs is an opportunity to be heard or someone to help nurture their talent,” says Urban. “Having the opportunity to do that not only inspires me, but I’m also hoping that in some way this scholarship will serve to inspire others.”
“Keith is the living embodiment of the Tamworth Festival pathway to success and together we want to help give other artists the opportunity to take Australian country music to the world. It’s wonderful that Keith continues to recognize and support the industry that helped shape his career,” adds Peter Ross, Executive Manager of the Tamworth Festival.
Applications will open in January 2026 and will be submitted online via www.tcmf.com.au/keith-urban-rising-star.
The “Long Hot Summer” singer’s ties to Tamworth run deep and his inspiring rise to stardom highlights the life-changing opportunities the festival provides to emerging artists. Since his early days of performing in Tamworth, he has racked up four GRAMMY Awards, 13 CMAs (including two Entertainer of the Year honors), 15 ACMs, three AMAs, nine ARIA Awards, and 15 Golden Guitar Awards.
He has also collaborated with legends of all different musical genres and earned memberships in both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry.
Currently, Keith Urban is on the road for his High and Alive World Tour, which features special guests Chase Matthew, Alana Springsteen, and Karley Scott Collins on select dates. The tour will conclude on October 17 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

Besides creating his own scholarship, fans of Urban can catch him on the upcoming show, The Road. Just another way to help and inspire, the country star will take contestants on the road to open for him. Unlike other singing competitions, The Road offers the singers real-life experience.
Joining forces with Gretchen Wilson and Blake Shelton for The Road, Urban recalled his own road to country music stardom. “I spent a lot of my underage life playing in some seedy pubs, sometimes just for the bartender. So I love the idea of throwing artists into a real-world environment to find out if they are artists.”
While the music industry might change, Urban insisted that every artist had to pay their dues. “Paying your dues sucks, but there are things in this business that can’t be taught, like how to put together a set list, whether to extend or cut a song during your performance or how to work the crowd.”
For those looking to apply for the Keith Urban Rising Star Scholarship, the application process will open in January 2026.
